Three Part Series – COVID-19 Pediatrics to Vaccines

As the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases continues to rise and schools, workplaces and public gathering spaces across the United States remain closed, a new Pew Research Center survey finds that the coronavirus outbreak is having profound impacts on the personal lives of Americans in a variety of ways. Nearly nine-in-ten U.S. adults say their life has changed at least a little as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, including 44% who say their life has changed in a major way.

COVID-19 has unique implications for child populations regarding physical health, mental development, and social well-being. Although evidence indicates that children are less susceptible to the more severe physical symptoms of COVID-19 that are reported in adults, emerging evidence points to new short- and long-term impacts that will affect children’s health long after the pandemic is adequately controlled.

Amid rising global numbers of daily coronavirus infections, a fresh flush of vaccine trial results is offering hope for the longer run. What are they? How close are they? How much will they help? What are the risks of particpating in a vaccine trial? There are more than 160 coronavirus vaccines in development around the world. About 140 of these are at the preclinical stage, meaning they are still being looked at in laboratories and in animal tests. Another 25 are already being tested in people.

This will be the focus of our three part series on COVID-19, starting with the most critical aspects taking care of our children, and what are the oppportunties through vaccines to help take care of all of us?

Starting August 2021 - Manage Your Care - Three Part Series

Starting August 2021  Posted by Host

Three Part Series – Manage Your Care before It Manages You!

Over the past several decades, the cost of care and our share has dramatically increased. Out-of-pocket costs have risen faster than our paychecks. Obtaining healthcare and paying for it has become a huge gamble. Those standing next to us seeking the exact same medical services in the exact same place with the exact same doctors pay wildly different prices. The cost of care has no consistency, or connection to the actual cost to produce that care unlike other goods and services we consume.

While so many aspects to our care and paying for it seem to be out of our control, there are things we can do to better manage our care and better manage the cost and consequences of it, starting with establishing the tools and information to help us do so, and then using those tools to better collaborate with our doctors and help coordinate our own care. This will be the focus of our three part series starting with the most critical aspects to gaining control over our care, collecting and using our own health records!

Part 1 – - Manage Your Care by managing your records and care coordiation
Part 2 – - Manage Your Care by managing your numbers and health risks

Part 3 – - Manage Your Care by managing your collaboration with tools such as telehealth

My Health Record

Starting Aug 17 2021- On-Demand |  Posted by Host

This first YouTube episode will put a spotlight on taking control and managing our care by first establishing a Personal Health Record or PHR. What is a PHR? What health data should be in it? To help address those questions Host Walt Culbertson will go halfway around the world to explore the advanced national effort being undertaken by the Australian Government to provide every Australian with a PHR called My Health Record. During a extended walkabout Sydney and the surrounding area, Culbertson interviewed 90 Australians about their thoughts about what their government is providing for them and how they will use My Health Record to help manage their care. As we will highlight, the results were not quite what was expected.

Culbertson will then compare the centralized approach of My Health Record, with the distributed approach here in the States under the leadership of CMS and HealthIT.gov with the funding that was and is being provided to doctors and hospitals nationally to make patient health records available to us.

We close by exploring what each nation could learn from each other, and what we can learn in the process to best assemble and use our healthcare information as a foundation to better manage our care and its cost.
